What to see in Guitiriz

Must-sees

Guitiriz is a municipality in the Terra Chá, in Lugo province, best known for its spa. The building, from the early 20th century and surrounded by a large wooded park, uses mineral waters that were already famous more than a hundred years ago. During the Civil War it served as a military hospital, and a small mosque was built in its grounds for wounded soldiers, a rarity that still survives. In the village centre are also the church of San Xoán and the Ecce Homo chapel.

Outside the village, the Os Sete Muíños recreation area, a step from the centre, has a pool on the Escádebas river for summer swimming, wooden bridges and small waterfalls. In the parish of Parga you can see the San Alberte ensemble, with its old bridge, chapel and fountain, and visit the San Breixo viewpoint. The Ruta da Auga, an easy trail, links several medicinal springs in the municipality.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours or guided visits in Guitiriz. The usual way is to explore on your own with information from the council, which has several waymarked hiking routes. The spa is the main draw and you can combine it with a walk in the park. If you want a guided visit, the simplest option is to find one in Lugo or Santiago and drive to Guitiriz as a side trip.

How long to spend

Half a day is enough to see the centre, the spa park and Os Sete Muíños. If you want a thermal circuit, a walk and a good meat meal, the local speciality, allow a full day or a quiet weekend. Guitiriz also fits well as a stop between Lugo and A Coruña.

Where to stay

The obvious choice is the spa itself, in the centre, with its park and thermal facilities. In the village there's also a simple guesthouse or two, and across the rural parishes you'll find rural guesthouses for those seeking calm. If there isn't enough on offer, Lugo is about half an hour's drive away with much more to choose from.
