What to see in Cieza

Must-sees

Cieza is in the Vega Alta of the Segura, in northern Murcia, surrounded by fruit orchards. The town is easy to explore on foot: the Basilica of La Asunción presides over the centre, and the riverside walk has good views of the valley. The Siyâsa Museum is the key visit for understanding the town's past, bringing together plasterwork, ceramics and objects from the Andalusi town that stood on the nearby hill.

That abandoned settlement, Medina Siyâsa, keeps the foundations of 12th and 13th-century houses, streets and courtyards, and its remains can be visited on the slope of the Monte del Castillo. To the west, the river cuts into the Almadenes canyon, one of the region's most spectacular landscapes. There you'll find the Cueva de la Serreta, with rock paintings included in the Mediterranean Basin rock art ensemble. If you go in late winter, peach blossom turns the whole valley pink.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Cieza. The most-booked activity is a via ferrata in the Almadenes canyon, with equipped sections above the river and a specialist guide. For the cultural side, the practical approach is to ask at the tourist office about guided visits of the town, Medina Siyâsa and the Cueva de la Serreta. During blossom season, routes through the orchards are organised.

How long to spend

Half a day is enough for the centre, the basilica and the Siyâsa Museum. If you add the climb to the Andalusi settlement, allow a full day. With two days you can spend one entirely in Los Almadenes, whether on the via ferrata, a hike or a boat or rafting descent from Calasparra. In spring it's worth booking ahead, as the blossom draws big crowds.

Where to stay

The most convenient option is to stay in central Cieza, near the basilica and the riverside walk, from where you can walk to almost everything. If you want peace, there are rural houses among the orchards in the valley and around, though you'll need a car. The town has limited accommodation, so if you can't find a room, Murcia is less than an hour away and has many more options.
