What to see in Morón de la Frontera

Must-sees

Morón de la Frontera is a town in the Seville countryside, at the foot of the hills, with about twenty-three thousand inhabitants. The first thing you see from afar is the church of San Miguel, built partly over an old mosque, mixing late Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque. Above it are the remains of the castle, Moorish in origin, which the Dukes of Osuna later turned into a fortress palace. In the centre, the church of San Ignacio, known as La Compañía, and the town hall are worth a stroll.

Morón also has a unique tradition: artisan lime-making, whose know-how was recognised by UNESCO in 2011 as a good practice in safeguarding intangible heritage. The kilns at the Caleras de la Sierra explain how it was made. At the Convent of Santa Clara you can buy the nuns' sweets, and in the Jardines del Gallo you'll see the cockerel sculpture behind a local legend. The town is also known for flamenco.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours or activities on booking platforms in Morón de la Frontera. The practical approach is to ask at the town's tourist office about visits to the local heritage and the lime area. If you prefer a guide, another option is to combine the visit with excursions from Seville, an hour's drive away, or with Osuna and other towns in the countryside.

How long to spend

A morning is enough for the centre, San Miguel, the castle and La Compañía. If you want to learn about the lime tradition at a relaxed pace, allow the full day. Morón can be done as a day trip from Seville or included in a two or three-day route through the countryside and southern hills, with stops in Osuna, Marchena or Utrera.

Where to stay

You can stay in central Morón, near the town hall square, with everything on foot, or in rural houses nearby if you're driving and want countryside. There isn't a wide choice, so it's best to book ahead. If you can't find a room, Osuna has charming places to stay and Seville the most complete range.
