What to see in Bárcena Mayor

Must-sees

Bárcena Mayor belongs to the municipality of Los Tojos, at the head of the Cabuérniga valley, and is the only inhabited village inside the Saja-Besaya Nature Park. It was declared a historic-artistic ensemble in 1979 for how well it preserves traditional mountain architecture. Its stone houses, with south-facing wooden balconies and galleries, line cobbled streets that only residents can drive along, so you explore on foot.

The Argoza river runs through the village and is crossed by a stone bridge, one of the most photographed spots. It's worth noticing the details: wash houses, ovens, stables and woodwork workshops that recall life in the past. An old road of Roman origin passes through the area, and paths lead off through oak and beech woods. Food is part of the visit: cocido montañés and game are the most typical dishes.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours or regular guided visits in Bárcena Mayor. The village is small and easy to explore on your own, taking in the houses and the bridge over the Argoza. To discover the nature park, people usually hike the Saja forests independently. Excursions combining inland Cantabrian villages also leave from Santander and the coast.

How long to spend

The village takes an hour or two, plus time for an unhurried meal. If you add a walk in the surroundings, allow a whole day. With two days you can round off the visit with other villages in the valley, such as Carmona, or with Cabezón de la Sal. At weekends and in summer lots of people come, so an early start helps.

Where to stay

Sleeping in Bárcena Mayor itself is the best experience: there are inns and rural houses in traditional buildings, and at night the village is quiet. Bear in mind the car is left in the car park at the entrance. Accommodation is limited, so if you can't find a room, the Cabuérniga valley and Cabezón de la Sal have more places a short distance away.
