What to see in Oropesa del Mar

Must-sees

Oropesa del Mar combines a small hilltop old town with several beaches below. Up top are the castle remains and quiet streets with white houses. On the coast, the 16th-century Torre del Rey recalls the defences against pirate raids, as does the Torre de la Corda by the cape.

The beaches are the main attraction: La Concha, a bay-shaped beach, is the most central, while Morro de Gos and the Les Platgetes area offer different atmospheres. The Vía Verde del Mar, on an old railway line, runs along the coast to Benicàssim and is ideal for walking or cycling.

Free tours and guided visits

Free walking tours are rare in Oropesa del Mar. The norm is occasional guided visits to the old town and the Torre del Rey, and excursions from here. The most interesting are routes in the Desert de les Palmes natural park, cycling or walking the greenway to Benicàssim, and trips to Peñíscola and boat rides along the coast.

How long to spend

The town can be seen in about three hours: climb to the old town, go down to the Torre del Rey and walk along La Concha beach. If you are on holiday, three or four days give you time for the beach, the greenway and a trip inland or up the northern coast. In summer, go up to the old town first thing or at sunset, when the heat is more bearable and the light is lovelier.

Where to stay

The La Concha beach area is the most practical: it is close to the old town and has restaurants and services. The Morro de Gos area is more residential and family-oriented. To the south stretch large tourist complexes by the beach, designed for sun-and-sand stays rather than seeing the town.
