What to see in Alcántara

Must-sees

Alcántara is a town in western Cáceres, on the Portuguese border, overlooking the river Tagus. Its great symbol is the Roman bridge, built in Trajan’s time by the architect Gaius Julius Lacer. Above the central pier stands an honorary arch dedicated to the emperor, and at the end nearest the town a small Roman temple survives. It is worth seeing from below, by the river, to appreciate the height of its arches.

In the old town, with its narrow, steep streets, you will see manor houses with coats of arms and the Puerta de la Concepción, the last remnant of the walls. Alcántara was the seat of the military order that bears its name, and its great building is the 16th-century Conventual de San Benito, with a Gothic cloister and a Renaissance loggia. Also notable are the church of Santa María de Almocóvar, of Romanesque origin, and that of San Pedro de Alcántara. The surroundings are part of the Tajo Internacional Natural Park.

Free tours and guided visits

In Alcántara you can book a guided tour covering the Roman bridge, the old town and the buildings of the Order of Alcántara. To see the area from the water there are kayak and boat trips on the reservoir, which show the bridge and the Tagus cliffs from another angle. If you are coming from Cáceres, some day trips along the border include the town.

How long to spend

Half a day gives you time to see the bridge and the Conventual de San Benito and stroll round the old town. If you add the reservoir activity or a riverside walk, set aside the whole day. In summer the Conventual de San Benito hosts a classical theatre festival that brings the town’s nights to life, a good time to stay over.

Where to stay

The most convenient place to stay is the old town, where there are rural cottages and small guesthouses within walking distance of the Conventual and the bridge. The choice is limited, especially in August, so book ahead. If you cannot find a room, Brozas or Garrovillas de Alconétar are relatively close, and the city of Cáceres, about 60 kilometres away, has much more choice.
