What to see in San Roque

Must-sees

San Roque is in the Campo de Gibraltar, on a hill overlooking the Bay of Gibraltar and the Rock. It was founded as a refuge for the residents who left Gibraltar after the English capture of 1704, and that history is felt throughout the old town. At the top stands the church of Santa María la Coronada, where the poet José Cadalso is buried, and next to it the Governors’ Palace, a former military headquarters.

The palace now houses several museums, including one devoted to Carteia and another to the local sculptor Luis Ortega Brú. Close by, on the Plaza de Armas, is the town hall. Outside the old town, at Guadarranque, you can visit the ruins of Carteia, one of the oldest Roman cities in the Iberian Peninsula. The municipality also reaches the coast, with Sotogrande, Torreguadiaro and their beaches.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in San Roque. The most practical thing is to stop at the tourist office to get your bearings and explore the old town on your own, which is small and easy to walk. For Carteia, check visiting arrangements beforehand, as the site is not always open. If you are on the Costa del Sol, some excursions pass through the area on the way to Gibraltar.

How long to spend

San Roque’s historic centre can be seen in two or three hours: the church, the palace with its museums and the viewpoints over the bay. With a full day you can add the Carteia ruins and finish on the beach. If you stay several days, the area makes a base for visiting Gibraltar, Tarifa or the white villages of inland Cádiz.

Where to stay

The old town itself has little accommodation, although it is the quietest option with the best views. Most places to stay are on the municipality’s coast: Sotogrande, Pueblo Nuevo de Guadiaro and Torreguadiaro concentrate hotels and apartments by the sea. If you want more choice or better connections, Algeciras and La Línea de la Concepción are a few minutes away.
