What to see in Arguedas

Must-sees

Arguedas is a village in the Ribera of Navarre considered the natural gateway to the Bardenas Reales, the great semi-desert landscape declared a Biosphere Reserve. The most curious thing in the village itself is its caves, homes dug into the rock in the late 19th century and lived in until the mid-20th century. You can see them from outside on a walk up the hill, which also offers views over the village. On top are a few remains of the old castle.

In the village, the church of San Esteban, with its altarpieces, the arcaded town hall and the hermitage of San Miguel, the oldest church in Arguedas, are worth a stop. On the outskirts, up in the hills, is the sanctuary of the Virgen del Yugo, with a viewpoint over the Bardenas that is one of the best places to watch the sunset. Very close to the village is Sendaviva, a nature park with animals and rides designed for families.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours of the village in Arguedas, but there are guided activities focused on the Bardenas Reales. The most popular are guided 4x4 routes through the Bardena Blanca, which take you to formations such as Castildetierra and explain how the landscape was shaped. You can also explore the tracks on your own by car or bike, respecting restricted zones, and combine the visit with a day at Sendaviva.

How long to spend

The village, the caves and the drive up to the Virgen del Yugo can be seen in half a day. For the Bardenas allow at least another half day, and a full day if you want to walk or cycle. Sendaviva alone takes a whole day. With two or three days you can do everything at leisure and visit Tudela, a few kilometres away.

Where to stay

Arguedas has rural houses and apartments, many in the village or on its edges, very handy for setting off early to the Bardenas when the light is best. Next to the Virgen del Yugo there is also a hostel. If you cannot find a room or prefer more services, Tudela is very close and has much more choice, as well as fine Ribera vegetable cooking.
