What to see in Valderrobres

Must-sees

Valderrobres is the capital of the Matarraña and you understand it as soon as you arrive. The classic entrance is over the Gothic bridge across the river, leading to the San Roque gate. From there cobbled streets climb to the square, presided over by the Renaissance town hall. It is worth walking slowly, looking at the stone houses and arches, and seeking out the corners that open onto the river.

At the very top are the castle-palace and the church of Santa María la Mayor, two Gothic buildings visited together that dominate the village. From the castle there are good views of the valley and the rooftops. On the way down, return to the river along the bank: the view of the bridge with the village behind is the best-known image of the area.

Free tours and guided visits

Free tours are not usual in Valderrobres. The norm is guided visits to the castle and the church, explaining the place’s history and its role as a seat of the Archbishops of Zaragoza, and some guided walks of the old town. As a day trip, the best is to head to Beceite and walk the Parrizal, with its walkways over the river. You can also tour other villages in the area, such as Calaceite, La Fresneda or Cretas, by car.

How long to spend

Three to four hours are enough for the village, including the castle visit. Arrive in the morning, cross the bridge and climb slowly to the castle, leaving the return along the river bank for last. If you want to get to know the Matarraña, allow two days: one for Valderrobres and the nearby villages, and another for the Parrizal at Beceite or another walk in the mountains.

Where to stay

The most practical choice is to sleep in the old town or by the bridge, a few steps from everything, so you can stroll the village at night and first thing, when there are fewer people. If you are driving and want to explore the area, the farmhouses and rural houses around are also good, quieter and with room to park.
