What to see in Cuacos de Yuste

Must-sees

Cuacos de Yuste is in the La Vera area, in the north of Cáceres province, at the foot of the Sierra de Gredos. Its name is linked to the Monastery of Yuste, of the Order of Saint Jerome, a few kilometres from the village. Emperor Charles V retired there after abdicating and spent his last months there. The visit takes in the palace he had built next to the monastery, with its austere rooms, the church and the cloisters. Very close by is the German cemetery, where soldiers from both world wars are buried.

The village deserves an unhurried stroll. The Plaza Mayor has stone arcades and half-timbered houses with balconies, the typical La Vera style. On the Plaza de Juan de Austria is the house where, according to tradition, Jeromín, the emperor's illegitimate son, lived. The Plaza de la Fuente de los Chorros and the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción complete the route through a village declared a historic ensemble.

Free tours and guided visits

The available activities centre on the Monastery of Yuste: you can book a ticket to explore it on your own or a guided visit explaining Charles V's life in retirement and the history of the building. There are no regular free walking tours of the village, which is easy to see on foot. La Vera also has walking routes through gorges and chestnut woods.

How long to spend

One day is enough for the monastery, the German cemetery and a stroll around the village. If you have two or three days, take the chance to visit other La Vera villages, such as Garganta la Olla, Jarandilla or Valverde de la Vera, and swim in one of the gorges if you come in summer. In spring and autumn the landscape is especially beautiful.

Where to stay

The most convenient option is to sleep in Cuacos itself, near the Plaza Mayor, where there are rural houses and small places to stay with everything close at hand. Around the village, on the road to the monastery and among chestnut woods, you will find more isolated rural houses. For more choice, Jarandilla de la Vera and Jaraíz de la Vera are a few kilometres away and make good bases for exploring the area.
