What to see in Ulldecona

Must-sees

Ulldecona is the southernmost municipality in Catalonia, in the Montsià, by the river Sénia, which separates it from the Valencia region. Its old town is arranged around the church of Sant Lluc, a Gothic building of surprising size for a town like this. On the hilltop are the remains of the castle, with a round tower and an old church, from where you can see the plain of olive trees stretching to the Montsià range.

What makes Ulldecona unique is its thousand-year-old olive trees. There are hundreds of monumental specimens in the municipality, some with twisted trunks several metres round, and they can be seen on estates set up for visitors. The other gem is in the Serra de Godall, next to the sanctuary of La Pietat: rock shelters with Levantine rock art, part of the ensemble declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Ulldecona, but there are some guided visits. The most popular tour the fields of ancient olive trees and end with an olive oil tasting, and there are also visits to the castle explaining its history. The rock paintings at La Pietat are visited with a guide, so check with the tourist office beforehand.

How long to spend

Half a day is enough for the old town, the church and the castle. If you add the ancient olive trees with tasting and the La Pietat shelters, allow a full day. With a second day you can head to the Ebro Delta or to Morella, in the Maestrazgo, both less than an hour away by car.

Where to stay

Ulldecona itself has little accommodation, mainly rural houses in town and farmhouses among the olive groves, a good option if you want peace and quiet. If you cannot find a room, Amposta, Sant Carles de la Ràpita or Vinaròs are close and have more hotels and apartments, plus beaches in the case of the last two.
