What to see in Mojácar

Must-sees

Mojácar has two sides: the village, white and perched on a hill, and the beach, which stretches along the coast. In the village, climb to the Castillo viewpoint and the one in Plaza Nueva, both looking out over the sea and the plain. Pass by the church of Santa María, which looks like a fortress, and the Puerta de la Ciudad. Look out for the indalo, the local symbol painted on many façades.

Lower down, the Fuente Mora is a place full of history for locals. A plaque recalls the village's surrender to the Catholic Monarchs. On the coast, the promenade links several sandy beaches and coves. To the south, Macenas beach has an old watchtower and a quieter feel.

Free tours and guided visits

On some days there are guided walks around the village explaining its Morisco past, the origin of the indalo and the legends of the fountain. Even so, in Mojácar guided visits and excursions are the norm. Trips leave from here for Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park by boat, kayak or 4x4. Another interesting option is a guided visit to the gypsum caves of Sorbas, with helmet and torch. There are also excursions to the Tabernas desert, with its old western film sets.

How long to spend

You can see Mojácar village in three or four hours, ideally early in the morning or at sunset, when it is cooler. To combine beach and excursions, allow three or four days: one for the village and the coast, one for Cabo de Gata and one for Sorbas or Tabernas.

Where to stay

If you want calm and views, stay in the village, in a house or small hotel in the old quarter. Bear in mind the slopes and the limited parking. If you want the beach, stay in Mojácar Playa, where most of the accommodation is, with restaurants and services. A bus links the two areas, but a car gives you more freedom for excursions.
