What to see in Velilla del Río Carrión

Must-sees

Velilla del Río Carrión is in the Montaña Palentina, at the foot of the Cantabrian Mountains, with the river Carrión running through the village. The landscape is dominated by peaks: the Espigüete, the area's most iconic mountain, Pico Murcia and Peña Lampa, on the border with León. For much of the 20th century it lived from coal mining, and the municipality includes several mountain hamlets such as Otero de Guardo, Cardaño de Abajo and Cardaño de Arriba.

The best-known sight is the Fuentes Tamáricas, intermittent springs already mentioned by Pliny that gave the village its old name. Next to them is the hermitage of San Juan de las Fuentes Divinas, a small late Romanesque church. Velilla is also the starting point of the Reservoirs Route, which climbs the road past the Compuerto and Camporredondo reservoirs into the heart of the natural park.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours in Velilla. The most popular activity is a themed children's trail dedicated to the Tooth Mouse, Ratoncito Pérez, a family route with little houses, paths and photo spots. Otherwise, the usual options are hiking routes in the Montaña Palentina, on your own or with local mountain guides, and the adventure and river activities organised in the area.

How long to spend

The village, the Fuentes Tamáricas and the hermitage can be seen in half a day, and if you have children the Ratoncito Pérez trail completes the day. With two or three days you can do the Reservoirs Route, walk the Cardaño valleys and, if you are fit and experienced, consider climbing the Espigüete. In winter, snow changes mountain conditions a lot.

Where to stay

Velilla has rural houses, apartments and a small hotel or two in the village, near the river, the most convenient base for getting around the area. For more peace, the mountain hamlets offer rural houses with views. Guardo, a few kilometres away, has more accommodation and services, and Cervera de Pisuerga is another good base for exploring the Montaña Palentina.
