What to see in Ourense

Must-sees

Ourense is the city of hot water. Right in the centre the Burgas spring up, thermal springs used since Roman times that you can see steaming as they emerge. Very close is the cathedral of San Martiño, with the Pórtico del Paraíso, inspired by Santiago's Pórtico de la Gloria. The old town is easy to explore on foot, between the Plaza Mayor, the Plaza del Hierro and streets full of wine bars.

Beside the river Miño you will see the Roman Bridge, rebuilt in medieval times, and the modern Millennium Bridge, with its raised walkway. Along the river there are open-air hot springs, such as Chavasqueira and Outariz, linked by a riverside path. The Gothic cloister of San Francisco is another recommended visit.

Free tours and guided visits

Ourense's free walking tours usually cover the old town, the Burgas, the cathedral and the Plaza Mayor. The guide explains the city's spa history and its legends. They are pay-what-you-like and usually last about two hours. Some finish in the wine quarter, where it is easy to try Ribeiro.

The most recommended excursion is the Ribeira Sacra. There are guided trips that include a catamaran ride through the Sil canyons, viewpoints and a monastery or two, such as Santo Estevo de Ribas de Sil. There are also routes around Ribeiro wineries and visits to the hot springs. In season, a tourist train runs along the Miño spa promenade.

How long to spend

One day is enough to get to know the city. Spend the morning on the old town, the Burgas and the cathedral, and the afternoon at the hot springs by the Miño, ending with some wine in the centre. If you have two days, the second is for the Ribeira Sacra, which needs a full day. With a third you can tour the Ribeiro wineries at leisure.

Where to stay

The best area to stay is the old town or its surroundings, near the Plaza Mayor and San Lázaro park. You have everything on foot, including the Burgas and the wine quarter, and there are good bus links to the hot springs. If you are driving, hotels near the Miño or at the edge of the city make parking and heading out to the Ribeira Sacra easier.
