What to see in Támara de Campos

Must-sees

Támara de Campos is a town in the Tierra de Campos of Palencia province, halfway between the Camino de Santiago and the Canal de Castilla. Its great landmark can be seen from afar: the church of San Hipólito el Real, a Gothic building enormous for the size of the village, with three naves, a four-tier tower built in the 17th century and coats of arms of the Catholic Monarchs. Inside, the Baroque main altarpiece, the pulpit with Mudéjar decoration and a Baroque organ resting on a single column deserve attention.

The village's other silhouette is the bell gable of the old church of the pilgrims' hospital, linked to the Order of Saint John. Remains of the medieval walls and several gates survive, of which the Puerta del Caño is the best preserved. The village, declared a historic ensemble, invites a quiet stroll among houses with coats of arms, underground wine cellars and the adobe dovecotes so typical of this area.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Támara de Campos. Most people visit San Hipólito and the rest of the village on their own, and it is worth asking at the town hall how to get inside the church, as it is not always open. If you want a guided tour, Palencia has free walking tours and city visits, and from there you can plan a day in the Tierra de Campos combining Támara with Frómista and the Canal de Castilla.

How long to spend

Two or three hours are enough to see the village, San Hipólito and the remains of the walls. To make the most of the day, head to Frómista, very close, to see its Romanesque church of San Martín and the locks of the Canal de Castilla, and finish with a walk along the towpath. With two days you can complete the route through other villages of the Tierra de Campos and the Camino de Santiago.

Where to stay

Accommodation in Támara de Campos is very limited, with a rural house or two in the village. The most practical option is to look in Frómista, which, being on the Camino de Santiago, has hotels, guesthouses and rural houses, or in Astudillo. If you prefer more services and are driving, the city of Palencia is less than half an hour away and a good base for exploring the area.
