What to see in Sant Carles de la Ràpita

Must-sees

Sant Carles de la Ràpita is on the Alfacs bay, at the southern tip of the Ebro Delta. Its modern origins go back to Charles III, who wanted to make it a great port. From that project remain the broad Plaça de Carles III and the ruins of the Església Nova, a Neoclassical church that was never finished. Its fishing port is one of the busiest in the area.

The Museu de la Mar de l'Ebre explains the area’s relationship with the river, the delta and the sea. From the Guardiola viewpoint, in the Montsià range, you see the bay and the delta plain. Across the bay is the Trabucador bar, a tongue of sand leading to the Punta de la Banya.

Free tours and guided visits

Free walking tours are not common here. The norm is guided excursions in the Ebro Delta. Boat trips around the Alfacs bay visiting the mussel and oyster rafts are worthwhile, and you can sometimes taste the produce. There are also bike routes through the rice fields, birdwatching outings at the lagoons and guided visits to the natural park’s viewpoints.

How long to spend

A few hours are enough for the town and the harbour. If you want to see the delta, allow two days: one for the bay, the shellfish rafts and the Trabucador, and another for exploring the rice fields and lagoons by bike or car. With a third day you can climb the Montsià or visit Tortosa. Spring and autumn are good times for birdwatching.

Where to stay

The most convenient area is the centre, between Plaça de Carles III and the harbour, with restaurants and services on foot. If you want beach and peace, there are hotels and apartments on the promenade and in the coastal developments. To be closer to the natural park, you can choose rural cottages in the delta itself. Either way, a car or bike is almost essential for getting around.
