What to see in Valbuena de Duero

Must-sees

Valbuena de Duero is in the heart of the Valladolid Ribera del Duero, in the river valley among vineyards of some of Spain's best-known wineries. In fact, the municipality is considered the birthplace of Vega Sicilia's wines, and renowned wineries follow one another along the road beside the Duero.

The big visit is the Monastery of Santa María de Valbuena, in the hamlet of San Bernardo. Founded in 1143 by Countess Estefanía de Armengol, it is one of the best-preserved Cistercian complexes in Castile and León. Today it is the headquarters of the Las Edades del Hombre Foundation, devoted to the region's sacred art. The chapel of San Pedro keeps Gothic mural paintings.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours in Valbuena de Duero, but there are guided visits linked to wine and the monastery. Several nearby wineries run tours of their facilities with tastings, and there are also plans combining a winery visit with the thermal circuit at the monastery spa. The monastery itself offers guided visits. Day trips through the Ribera del Duero leave from Valladolid.

How long to spend

Allow half a day for the monastery and the village. If you add one or two winery visits, give it the full day, unhurried and with time for lunch in the area. With two days you can explore the so-called Golden Mile of the Duero and climb to Peñafiel castle with its Wine Museum, a few kilometres away.

Where to stay

Sleeping next to the monastery is the most special option, as part of the complex operates as a spa hotel with mineral waters. The village and San Bernardo also have a rural house or two. For more choice and varied prices, Peñafiel is very close and has hotels and restaurants, and Quintanilla de Onésimo is another practical base among the wineries.
