What to see in Jafre

Must-sees

Jafre is a small village in the Baix Empordà, in Girona province, on a terrace on the left bank of the Ter, among orchards and irrigated fields. Its old centre is compact and clusters around the 18th-century church of Sant Martí, with a doorway decorated with a relief of the saint dividing his cloak and an octagonal bell tower. Attached to it are remains of the old castle, now part of a house façade.

Walking along the Carrer Major you will see houses with 17th and 18th-century lintels and two large manor houses, Can Pou and Can Ric. On the outskirts is the 15th-century sanctuary of the Font Santa, built beside a spring that drew pilgrims from all over the Empordà. The 18th-century Jafre mill, which keeps its old machinery, is also worth a look.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours or guided visits in Jafre, which is easy to see on your own. The best-known activity in the area is a balloon flight over the Empordà, with views of the Montgrí, the fields and the Costa Brava in the background, usually early in the morning. For conventional guided visits, the most practical options are those in Girona or in nearby medieval villages such as Pals or Peratallada.

How long to spend

The village can be explored in an hour, and with another you can visit the Font Santa and the mill. If you do the balloon flight, set aside the whole morning, as it means a very early start. Ideally use Jafre as a stop on a one or two-day route through the Baix Empordà, combining it with Verges, Torroella de Montgrí and the coast at L'Escala.

Where to stay

Jafre has little accommodation, based on farmhouses and rural houses in the surroundings, set among fields and very quiet. It is a good base if you have a car and want to explore the inland Empordà. If you cannot find a room, Verges and Torroella de Montgrí are right next door, and on the coast L'Escala and L'Estartit have much more choice. Girona is the city alternative, half an hour away by car.
