What to see in Ezkio

Must-sees

Ezkio is part of the municipality of Ezkio-Itsaso, in the Goierri area of Gipuzkoa, between Zumarraga and Beasain at the foot of Mount Izazpi. It is a small rural settlement surrounded by farmhouses and meadows. In the centre stands the church of San Miguel Arcángel, medieval in origin, with a Gothic doorway and three naves. The atmosphere is peaceful, ideal for walking among farmhouses and enjoying the green landscape of inland Gipuzkoa.

The main visit is the Igartubeiti farmhouse museum, a 16th- and 17th-century farmhouse that keeps its original timber structure and a large working cider press. Going round it helps you understand how people lived and worked on a Basque farm. In the Santa Lutzi district, at Anduaga, a cross surrounded by images recalls the Marian apparitions that drew thousands of people in the 1930s.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free tours in Ezkio. The most interesting guided visit is Igartubeiti, which offers guided tours of the farmhouse, best booked ahead. The rest you can see on your own, walking among farmhouses or climbing towards the Izazpi. If you are staying in San Sebastián, some trips into inland Gipuzkoa combine a farmhouse visit with a cider house.

How long to spend

Half a day is enough for Igartubeiti and a stroll round Ezkio. If you want to walk in the nearby hills, allow a full day. Ideally combine the visit with other villages in the Goierri and the Urola, such as Zumarraga and Urretxu, home to the mausoleum of the bard Iparragirre, or Legazpi and its iron-working past, all a few minutes' drive away.

Where to stay

Accommodation in and around Ezkio is limited to the odd farm stay and rural house in farmhouses, good for those seeking calm and scenery. Bear in mind you will need a car to get around. If you prefer more services, Zumarraga, Urretxu or Beasain, very close, have hotels and train connections. You can also visit as a day trip from San Sebastián or Vitoria.
