What to see in Ribadesella

Must-sees

Ribadesella is a town in eastern Asturias, at the mouth of the river Sella. The old town, with its colourful houses, surrounds the harbour and the main street. On the Paseo de la Grúa there are panels by Mingote telling the town's history. Across the estuary is Santa Marina beach, with a promenade of indiano villas built in the early 20th century.

The big visit is the Tito Bustillo cave, with Palaeolithic rock art and declared a World Heritage Site. Next to it is an interpretation centre. For good views, climb to the Guía chapel above the harbour mouth. Dinosaur footprints are preserved along the nearby coast.

Free tours and guided visits

Ribadesella has no regular free walking tours. The essential guided visit is the Tito Bustillo cave, which has limited capacity and only opens part of the year, so book ahead. The rock art centre can also be toured with commentary. The best-known activity is the Sella canoe descent from Arriondas, offered by many companies with transfers included. Trips to Covadonga and the Lakes are also common, as is a visit to the Jurassic Museum of Asturias, in Colunga, about twenty minutes away.

How long to spend

One day covers the old town, the Santa Marina promenade, the Guía chapel and the cave. If you add the Sella descent, which takes up almost a full day, you will need two days. With three or four you can add Covadonga and the Lakes, the Jurassic museum and nearby towns such as Llanes or Lastres.

Where to stay

The old town, by the harbour, is the best area for having restaurants and cider houses on foot and an evening buzz. The Santa Marina district, facing the beach, is quieter and has hotels in old indiano villas. If you are doing the Sella descent, Arriondas is another practical option. In summer and during the canoe festival, book well in advance.
