What to see in Monfero

Must-sees

Monfero is a rural municipality in the Eume area, in the north of A Coruña province, covered in hills and forests. Its great monument is the monastery of Santa María de Monfero, medieval in origin and linked to the Cistercian order since the 12th century. What you see today is mostly 17th-century, and the most striking feature is the Baroque church façade, with columns decorated in a stone chequerboard unlike anything else in the area.

Inside the church are four Gothic tombs of the Andrade family, the lords of this area, and a Baroque main altarpiece. Only a fragment of the Romanesque cloister remains. The other reason to come is nature: part of the Fragas do Eume Natural Park lies in the municipality, one of the best-preserved Atlantic forests in Europe. Viewpoints such as the one over the Eume reservoir or Pico Vales offer wide views over the valleys.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours or regular guided visits in Monfero. The monastery is visited on your own, and it is worth asking at the town hall whether any visits are organised during your stay. The Fragas do Eume are explored on foot along waymarked routes, and the area has guided hikes and kayak hire on the river. Day trips including the Fragas do Eume leave from A Coruña and Ferrol.

How long to spend

An hour is enough for the monastery. Ideally give Monfero a full day: the monastery and a viewpoint in the morning, and a route through the Fragas do Eume in the afternoon. If you like walking, with two days you can do longer routes in the park and visit Pontedeume, where the Eume meets the estuary. The roads are narrow and winding, so plan your timings carefully.

Where to stay

Accommodation in Monfero is scarce and almost all rural houses spread across the parishes, in the middle of nature. They are a good option if you want silence and to walk from the door. If you prefer more services, Pontedeume and Betanzos, both less than half an hour away, have more choice, restaurants and old towns to stroll. A Coruña and Ferrol are the alternative if you want to combine nature and city.
