What to see in Isil

Must-sees

Isil is a tiny village in the municipality of Alt Àneu, in the Pallars Sobirà, by the Noguera Pallaresa and close to its source. Its stone houses with slate roofs cluster at the bottom of a narrow valley surrounded by forest. About five hundred metres downriver is the Romanesque church of Sant Joan d'Isil, with three naves and a south façade decorated with arcading, a doorway of several archivolts and figured capitals.

Isil is known above all for its Falles, the night-time descent of burning torches from the mountain down to the village. It is part of the summer solstice fire festivals of the Pyrenees, recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Following the valley upwards you reach Alós d'Isil, another settlement of traditional architecture and the starting point for routes into the Alt Pirineu Natural Park.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours or Civitatis activities in Isil. It is a place to visit on your own: the village and the church of Sant Joan can be explored on foot in a short time. To understand the valley's culture, head to Esterri d'Àneu, home to the Ecomuseu de les Valls d'Àneu. Guided activities in the area, such as rafting or mountain routes, are booked in Llavorsí, Sort or Esterri.

How long to spend

An hour is enough for the village and the church. If you continue to Alós d'Isil and take a walk along the valley, allow half a day. Combined with Esterri d'Àneu and other villages of the Valls d'Àneu, it makes a good full day. If you want to see the Falles, bear in mind that many people descend on a very small valley that night, so plan accommodation well in advance.

Where to stay

Isil and Alós d'Isil have very little accommodation, barely a rural house or two. The practical option is to stay in Esterri d'Àneu, about fifteen minutes away, which has hotels, apartments and services. València d'Àneu and Sorpe are quiet alternatives in the same valley, and in summer there are also campsites near the Noguera Pallaresa.
