What to see in Móstoles

Must-sees

Móstoles is one of the big cities south of Madrid, with plenty of life of its own. Its best-known historical episode is the mayors’ proclamation of 1808, which called for an uprising against the French troops after the 2nd of May. The House Museum of Andrés Torrejón, one of those mayors, recalls that moment. Nearby is the church of La Asunción, and a little further the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de los Santos.

For contemporary art there is the Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo, a museum with temporary exhibitions. The city has many parks, such as El Soto, with a lake and large green areas, and the Finca Liana. Its great advantage is the connection with Madrid by commuter train and by metro, via the line linking the southern towns.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Móstoles, although the council sometimes organises guided routes around the historic centre. The practical option is to go into Madrid, where there are daily free walking tours of Habsburg Madrid, Sol, the Plaza Mayor and the Royal Palace. Among paid visits, guided tours of the Prado or the Royal Palace and day trips to Toledo, Aranjuez or Segovia are worthwhile.

How long to spend

Móstoles can be seen in half a day: the house museum, the church, the hermitage and a park, plus the Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo if it interests you. If you are staying here to see Madrid, allow three or four days. Spend two in the capital and one or two in Toledo, Aranjuez or Segovia.

Where to stay

The most convenient choice is to sleep near the commuter rail station or a metro stop, so you can reach central Madrid without a car. Central Móstoles has shops, bars and restaurants at hand. If you are driving, the areas near the A-5 make trips to Toledo and the south-west easier.
