What to see in Colònia de Sant Jordi

Must-sees

Colònia de Sant Jordi is a coastal village in the municipality of Ses Salines, in southern Majorca. It keeps a seafaring feel, with a small harbour, rocky coves and a seafront promenade. Its big draw is the proximity of Es Trenc, a long beach of white sand and clear water, surrounded by dunes and a protected natural area. Beside it are the salt pans that give the municipality its name.

Boats leave the harbour for the Cabrera Archipelago Maritime-Terrestrial National Park. The village has a visitor centre dedicated to the park, with aquariums and exhibitions on its marine life. Other nearby beaches are Es Carbó and Es Dolç, quieter and reachable on foot from the village.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no pay-what-you-like free walking tours in Colònia de Sant Jordi. The usual options are boat trips to Cabrera, which include a visit to the island and its castle and, on many trips, the Blue Cave. As it's a national park, access is regulated. There are also guided kayak routes and diving and snorkelling trips. For free walking tours you need to go to Palma, where they usually cover the old town, the cathedral and the Jewish quarter.

How long to spend

One day is enough for the beach and the village. The trip to Cabrera takes up almost a whole day, so two or three days is sensible. With more time you can visit Santanyí, Cap de ses Salines and the south-east coves. In summer, book the Cabrera boat in advance and save the beach for the cooler hours.

Where to stay

The best option is to stay in the village centre, near the harbour, so you can walk to the boat and the nearby beaches. There are seafront hotels and apartments. If you want a rural setting, the estates inland in Ses Salines and Campos are peaceful, though you'll need a car. In high season, accommodation fills up fast.
