What to see in Cangas de Morrazo

Must-sees

Cangas de Morrazo is on the northern shore of the Vigo estuary, on the Morrazo peninsula, directly opposite the city of Vigo. Its centre has a lively seafront promenade, the fishing harbour and the Colexiata de Santiago, a 16th-century church. Next to the town is Rodeira, a wide urban beach.

Beyond the town, the coast has much more to offer. Hío has its famous cruceiro, one of the most elaborate stone crosses in Galicia. To the west you reach Cabo Home, with its lighthouses, and Barra beach. Monte do Facho, in Donón, holds the remains of a hillfort and has views towards the Cíes Islands.

Free tours and guided visits

Free walking tours in Cangas are occasional, mostly in summer, and usually cover the centre, the harbour and the Colexiata, with stories such as the 17th-century Inquisition trials against women from the town. Guided visits and excursions are more common, though.

The most recommended is the boat trip to the Cíes Islands, which in season leaves from Cangas harbour itself; remember that access to the park requires prior authorisation. There are also guided hikes around Cabo Home and O Facho, trips to see the mussel rafts in the estuary and visits to Vigo on the ferry across the estuary.

How long to spend

A few hours are enough for the town: the promenade, the harbour, the Colexiata and a seafood lunch. With two or three days you can spend one on the Cíes Islands and another on the coast at Cabo Home, Hío and Aldán. If you stay longer, cross to Vigo or explore the Pontevedra estuary.

Where to stay

The centre of Cangas, near the promenade and the harbour, is the best base: bars, restaurants and the boats to Vigo and the Cíes are a few steps away. If you want beach and quiet, the Rodeira area is convenient. To be surrounded by nature, Hío, Aldán and Donón have rural accommodation, though a car becomes necessary there.
