What to see in Bocairent

Must-sees

Bocairent is in the south of Valencia province, on the edge of the Sierra de Mariola. Its medieval old town crowds onto a hill, with narrow streets, stairways and passages that keep the Moorish-era layout. At the top is the church of La Asunción, and beside it the parish museum, which holds Valencian painting, including works attributed to Juan de Juanes and his circle. The bullring, carved into the rock in the 19th century, is another curious stop.

The most unusual sight is in the ravine. The Covetes dels Moros are dozens of artificial caves cut into a sheer rock face, with windows at different heights, and you can go inside. Nearby is the Cava de Sant Blai, an old snow pit, one of the ice stores once used in the sierra. The Barranc de la Fos offers a short walk between rock walls.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Bocairent. The usual format is guided visits of the old town and entry to the Covetes dels Moros, which are generally done with a guide because of the tricky access. In the Sierra de Mariola there are guided hikes and nature excursions. If you're staying in Valencia or on the coast, some day trips combine Bocairent with other inland towns.

How long to spend

Allow five or six hours to see the town at a relaxed pace. In the morning, the old town, the church and the museum. After lunch, the Covetes dels Moros, the Cava de Sant Blai and a walk through the ravine. If you like walking, add a second day for a hike in the Sierra de Mariola. In February, the Moors and Christians festival fills the town, so book well in advance.

Where to stay

The best option is to stay in or on the edge of the old town, where there are rural houses and small hotels in restored buildings. From there you do everything on foot and enjoy the town once the day visitors leave. Bear in mind that the upper streets are steep with steps, worth considering if you have heavy luggage. Nearby Ontinyent has more on offer if you can't find a room.
