What to see in Frigiliana

Must-sees

Frigiliana sits on the slopes of the Sierra de la Almijara, about six kilometres from Nerja, with views of the sea. Its old town has a Moorish layout, with narrow, steep streets, steps, whitewashed houses and flowerpots on the walls. The best way to see it is to wander, heading up towards the top, where the views open out over the coast.

Along the way you will find ceramic tiles telling the story of the Morisco revolt of 1569 and the battle of the Peñón de Frigiliana. In the lower part stands the Palace of the Counts of Frigiliana, known as El Ingenio, the last cane honey factory in Europe. The church of San Antonio de Padua and the remains of the old castle, at the top of the village, are also worth a visit.

Free tours and guided visits

Free tours are uncommon in Frigiliana. The usual options are guided visits to the old town, sometimes combined with Nerja on the same day, explaining the Andalusí past and the history of the Moriscos. The village is small and easy to explore on your own, following the tiles that tell its story.

The surroundings offer plenty of options. The Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park has hiking routes, some guided. The most popular is the river Chíllar walk, which starts in Nerja and is partly done wading through the water. In Nerja you can visit the Nerja Caves and the Balcón de Europa, and there are kayak trips to see the Maro cliffs.

How long to spend

Frigiliana takes half a day, about three or four hours. Go early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when there are fewer people and it is less hot. The most practical plan is to combine it with Nerja on the same day: the morning in the village and the afternoon at the Nerja Caves or on the beach. If you like walking, add a day for the river Chíllar.

Where to stay

Sleeping in Frigiliana lets you see it peaceful at night. There are small hotels and houses in the old town and in the new part, by the access road, where parking is easier. If you prefer the beach and more services, Nerja is the best alternative. From there you reach the village in a few minutes by car or bus, with restaurants and the coast close at hand.
