What to see in Sitges

Must-sees

Sitges is a seaside town south of Barcelona, known for its beaches, its white old town and its artistic tradition. Its best-known image is the church of Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla, on a headland by the sea. Close by are the Cau Ferrat Museum, once the home and studio of the painter Santiago Rusiñol, and the Maricel complex, with art galleries facing the Mediterranean.

The centre is easy to walk. Carrer Major and the streets running down to the sea have shops, bars and the houses of the indianos, locals who came back rich from the Americas. The promenade links several town beaches, from La Fragata to La Ribera and beyond. In October the town hosts a fantasy film festival, and its carnival is one of the liveliest in Catalonia.

Free tours and guided visits

In season, Sitges has tip-based free tours that cover the old town, the church, the indianos’ houses and the story of local Modernisme. There are also paid guided visits to the Cau Ferrat and Maricel museums, and themed routes about Rusiñol’s era and the artists who passed through the town.

For a day out, the Garraf Natural Park, with trails above the sea, and the Penedès wineries, known for their sparkling wines, are worth it. Barcelona is less than an hour away by train, so you can combine beach and city. Vilanova i la Geltrú, a few minutes away, is another easy visit along the coast.

How long to spend

Sitges can be seen in a day: the church and museums in the morning, the beach and the promenade in the afternoon. With two or three days you can enjoy it at a relaxed pace, add a walk in the Garraf or a winery visit, and spend a day in Barcelona. In summer, keep free time for the beach.

Where to stay

The old town and the streets by the promenade are the best area to stay. Everything is within walking distance, with the beach, restaurants and the train station nearby. If you’re after something quieter, the Terramar area, to the west, has residential streets and wide beaches. Bear in mind that in summer and during the film festival and carnival prices rise and it’s best to book early.
