What to see in Láchar

Must-sees

Láchar is a village in the Vega de Granada, west of the city, on a rise beside the river Genil surrounded by pine woods and farmland. Its big draw is the castle, a neo-Moorish mansion built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by the Duke of San Pedro de Galatino over the remains of a Nasrid fortress. A tower from around 1500 survives from the original building, and the complex is a listed Site of Cultural Interest.

Alfonso XIII, who came several times to hunt on the estate, Arthur Conan Doyle and the painter Joaquín Sorolla, who painted the estate chapel here, all passed through the castle. Today it belongs to the town and can be visited inside, with its halls, library, armoury and walled gardens. In the village you can also see the church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario and, on the outskirts, the Eiffel Bridge over the Genil, an old iron bridge now closed to traffic.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Láchar, but you can take a guided visit of the castle, the most complete way to learn its history and see the halls inside. Group visits must be booked in advance. For the rest of the village, a stroll on your own is enough, and the tourist office is in the town hall. If you are staying in Granada, Láchar makes a good short half-day trip.

How long to spend

Two or three hours are more than enough for the castle visit, a stroll along Calle Real and the church. If you feel like walking, add time for the Señorío de Láchar route, through the pine woods and the old reservoir the duke had built. The most practical plan is to combine it on the same day with Santa Fe or other villages in the Vega before returning to Granada.

Where to stay

Accommodation in Láchar is very scarce, so most people sleep elsewhere. Santa Fe and nearby villages in the Vega have some quiet options a few minutes away by car. The most convenient alternative is to stay in Granada, especially in the centre or near the western exit, and visit Láchar by car or bus, as there are lines linking the village with the city.
