What to see in Can Pastilla

Must-sees

Can Pastilla is a seaside neighbourhood of Palma, east of the city and very close to the airport. It marks the start of Platja de Palma, a long stretch of sand that continues to s’Arenal. Its promenade is flat and pleasant for walking or cycling, with the marina at one end and views of the bay. It is a quiet area, with a neighbourhood feel and lots of families.

The main sights are in the centre of Palma, a short bus ride away. There you have the cathedral, La Seu, facing the sea, and next to it the Almudaina palace. It is worth getting lost in the old town, with its courtyards and narrow streets, and climbing up to the circular Bellver Castle, which has good views over the city and the port.

Free tours and guided visits

Pay-what-you-like free walking tours take place in the centre of Palma. They usually cover the old town, the cathedral area, the Arab baths and the grand courtyards, and explain the city’s history since the Christian conquest. They are a good way to get your bearings on the first day before visiting the monuments on your own.

Among the paid visits, the guided entry to the cathedral is worthwhile, as it helps you understand its Gothic architecture and Gaudí’s work inside. Day trips to the Serra de Tramuntana are highly recommended: Valldemossa, Deià and Sóller, sometimes combined with the vintage train and the tram to the port. There are also boat trips around the bay.

How long to spend

You need two or three days to get to know Palma at a relaxed pace. Spend the first on the old town and the cathedral. The second on Bellver Castle, the Santa Catalina neighbourhood and the promenade. If you stay longer, keep a day for the Serra de Tramuntana and another to enjoy the beach in Can Pastilla, which is exactly what the neighbourhood does best.

Where to stay

Staying in Can Pastilla makes sense if you want the beach at hand, the airport nearby and slightly lower prices than in the centre. Look for hotels on the seafront or near the promenade, with good bus connections to Palma. If your priority is seeing the city and going out at night, the old town or Santa Catalina will put everything within walking distance, although you will lose the beach on your doorstep.
