What to see in Asque

Must-sees

Asque is a small hamlet in the municipality of Colungo, in the Somontano de Barbastro, set within the Sierra y Cañones de Guara Nature Park, beside the Vero river canyon. It's a place for walking and taking in the scenery rather than for monuments. In the village, the church of Santa Columba stands out.

What really draws people is all around it. Very close is the Regacéns rock shelter, a cave used as a livestock shelter that keeps red and black rock paintings, part of the Vero river rock art ensemble. The Puente del Diablo spans the canyon between Asque and Colungo, in a setting steeped in legend. Following the river you reach the Villacantal bridge and, downstream, Alquézar, with its collegiate church on the rock.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours or regular guided visits of the village in Asque. The usual way is to explore the area on your own along the Camino Natural del Somontano, whose first stage is a circular route that leaves Alquézar, drops into the Vero canyon, passes Asque and the Puente del Diablo and returns via Colungo. For the rock art and for canyoning, people usually start from Alquézar, where the tourist information and adventure companies are.

How long to spend

The village itself takes less than an hour to see. If you do the circular route from Alquézar, around 17 kilometres with plenty of climbing, allow a full day, about six hours' walking plus stops. With two or three days you can combine Asque with Alquézar, the Vero paintings, a walkway or canyon in Guara and a visit to the Somontano wineries near Barbastro.

Where to stay

In Asque and Colungo, accommodation is limited to rural houses and rural apartments, ideal if you're after silence and walking from the door. Alquézar, a few kilometres away, has many more options, from small hotels to hostels, and more restaurants. If you're driving and want town services, Barbastro is about half an hour away and a good base for exploring the Somontano.
