What to see in Brihuega

Must-sees

Brihuega is the best-known town in the Alcarria and keeps much of its medieval wall. Enter through the Puerta de la Cadena and stroll towards the Piedra Bermeja castle, built on a cliff facing the Tajuña valley. Next to it is the 13th-century church of Santa María de la Peña, halfway between Romanesque and Gothic. The village has two other churches from the same period, San Felipe and San Miguel.

Another key sight is the Royal Cloth Factory, an 18th-century building with an unusual circular plan and gardens looking over the valley. Beneath the old town run the so-called Arab caves, galleries dug into the rock that you can visit. And in summer, especially in July, the lavender fields around the town turn purple and draw many visitors.

Free tours and guided visits

Pay-what-you-like free walking tours are rare in Brihuega. The usual option is guided visits of the historic centre, covering the wall, the churches and the caves, often run by the tourist office itself. They help you understand the town's history, including the 1710 battle during the War of the Spanish Succession.

During the flowering season there are guided visits to the lavender fields and local distilleries, where they explain how lavender is grown and the essence extracted. You can also follow routes through other Alcarria villages or drive to Guadalajara and Sigüenza.

How long to spend

Brihuega is easily seen in a day. Spend the morning on the old town: wall, castle, churches and caves, at a relaxed pace, about three or four hours. In the afternoon visit the gardens of the Royal Cloth Factory and, if it is July, head to the lavender fields late in the day, when the light is softer. If you want to see more Alcarria villages, add a second day.

Where to stay

The best choice is to stay inside the walls or very close to the Plaza del Coso. That way you have all the monuments, the restaurants and the viewpoint over the valley on foot. In the lavender season demand rises sharply, so book in advance. If you cannot find a room, the rural houses in nearby Alcarria villages are a good alternative if you are driving.
