What to see in Caldas de Luna

Must-sees

Caldas de Luna is a small village in the municipality of Sena de Luna, in the mountains of northern León, by the Caldas river, a tributary of the Luna. Its name comes from the hot springs that rise here and gave rise to an early 20th-century spa that is still running. The village is part of the Valles de Omaña y Luna Biosphere Reserve, a land of valleys, meadows and forests where brown bears and Cantabrian capercaillie still live.

Rather than monuments, what awaits you is nature. The local trails climb through beech and oak woods to the old high pastures, with views of the peaks separating Luna from Arbas. Downstream, the valley opens out towards the Barrios de Luna reservoir, and to the west begins the Babia district, with its farming villages and limestone mountains.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours or guided visits in Caldas de Luna, which is very small. The usual way to get to know it is to walk the local trails on your own or join the outdoor activities offered around the spa. If you're in León, you'll also find day trips into the León mountains that pass through the Luna and Babia valleys.

How long to spend

A couple of hours are enough to stroll around the village and see the area around the spa. For a hike in the hills, allow half a day or a long morning. Two or three days is ideal: one to relax in the hot springs, another to walk in the valley and another to drive around Babia and the shores of the Barrios de Luna reservoir.

Where to stay

The natural choice is to stay at the spa itself or in the rural houses of Caldas and neighbouring villages such as Sena de Luna. It's a very quiet area with few services, so it's best to come by car. If you can't find a room, Babia and the villages near the reservoir have more rural houses, and the city of León is a little under an hour away.
