What to see in Porto Cristo

Must-sees

Porto Cristo is the port of Manacor, on Majorca's east coast. It is a seafaring town set in a narrow, deep cove, with a small sandy beach next to the marina and a lively promenade. Its big attraction is the nearby caves, especially the Caves of Drach, with stalactite formations and a large underground lake where a short classical music concert is performed.

The Caves of Hams, on the outskirts, are another option with a guided route. Around the town there are coves with clear water, such as Cala Anguila, Cala Mendia and Cala Varques, the last reachable only on foot. Manacor, a few kilometres away, is the city of pearls and has a historic centre with the church of Nuestra Señora de los Dolores.

Free tours and guided visits

There are hardly any free tours in Porto Cristo. The usual options are guided visits to the caves, which can only be explored accompanied and at set times, and boat trips along the coast. Excursions leave from here to Artà, Capdepera castle and the Caves of Artà, as well as kayak routes around the coves. For free tours, Palma is the place to go, with walks around the old town and the cathedral.

How long to spend

One day is enough for the Caves of Drach, the harbour and a cove. With two or three days you can add the Caves of Hams, Manacor and the nearby coves. If you come for a week, Porto Cristo works as a base for exploring the whole east coast. It is best to book cave tickets, especially in summer, and to visit the coves first thing in the morning.

Where to stay

The most convenient option is to stay near the harbour and the promenade, with restaurants and the beach close at hand. The area along the road to the caves is close to the main sights. If you prefer quiet coves, the nearby coastal developments have apartments and hotels, best with a car. Manacor is an alternative with more moderate prices.
