What to see in Cuevas Bajas

Must-sees

Cuevas Bajas is a small village in the north of the province of Málaga, on the border with Córdoba, surrounded by olive groves and overlooking the Genil valley. It takes its name from the natural caves in the area. The village keeps an Andalusian feel, with short streets, window grilles and balconies. Its main monument is the 18th-century church of San Juan Bautista, a large church for a village of this size. Old façades survive on the Calle Real, and on several houses you will see small devotional niches.

The other great attraction is the river. By the Genil there are traditional market gardens, and remains of Roman villas and of a road that passed nearby have been found in the area.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free tours in Cuevas Bajas, as the village is easy to explore on your own. What it does have is water activities: on this stretch of the Genil there are rafting trips and kayak routes, led by instructors and suitable for beginners. They are the most popular way to see the river and are best booked ahead.

How long to spend

A morning is enough for the church, the Calle Real and a walk down to the river. If you go rafting or kayaking, add another half day for the activity. Ideally combine it with nearby villages such as Cuevas de San Marcos or Benamejí, or with Antequera, under an hour's drive away and with plenty to see.

Where to stay

Accommodation in Cuevas Bajas is limited, mainly rural houses, some in the village and others in the countryside among olive trees near the river. They are a good choice for groups or families. If you cannot find a room, Antequera has much more choice, and the area around the Iznájar reservoir, across the border in Córdoba, adds rural stays with views of the water.
