What to see in Noja

Must-sees

Noja is a summer resort in the Trasmiera district, in eastern Cantabria. Its two big beaches set the village's rhythm. Trengandín is long, open and surrounded by dunes, and Ris, more sheltered and family-friendly, has an islet near the shore that you can reach at low tide. Between them are small coves and a coastal path with views of the Cantabrian Sea.

Noja's other great asset is the Joyel and Victoria marshes, part of the Marismas de Santoña Natural Park. They are a good place to see waterbirds, especially in autumn and winter. In the village centre, the church of San Pedro and several stone mansions stand out.

Free tours and guided visits

Noja has no free walking tours. The usual options are guided nature routes through the marshes, with birdwatching, and trips to nearby towns. In Santoña you can visit an anchovy cannery or walk the path to the Caballo lighthouse. Next door in Arnuero is the old Santa Olaja tide mill, visited with commentary. For town free walking tours you will need to go to Santander, about forty minutes away by car. Other popular outings are boat trips around the bay of Santoña and surf lessons at Trengandín.

How long to spend

One or two days are enough to get to know Noja. Spend one on the beaches and the coastal path, and another on the marshes, ideally at low tide to see more birds. If you stay a week, use the village as a base for Santoña, Laredo, Castro Urdiales and Santander, all less than an hour away.

Where to stay

The Ris area is the most convenient for families, with the beach to hand, shops and restaurants. Near Trengandín you will find more apartments and a slightly more spread-out feel, good if you want peace. The village centre lies halfway and lets you walk between the two beaches. In summer book ahead, because Noja's population multiplies.
