What to see in Almodóvar del Río

Must-sees

Almodóvar del Río is on the banks of the Guadalquivir, about 25 kilometres from Córdoba, and its skyline is defined by the castle crowning a hill above the white houses. The fortress is Moorish in origin and was restored in the early 20th century, so today it looks almost complete, with its walls, towers, parade ground and dungeons. Inside, models and recreations show medieval life, and it served as a location for the seventh season of Game of Thrones.

Below, the old town has narrow, steep streets climbing towards the castle, with the parish church of the Inmaculada Concepción and the hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Rosario. By the river, the Portus Romano, an old landing stage, offers one of the best views of the castle reflected in the water. A few kilometres away is the La Breña reservoir, with walking and cycling routes and kayaking.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Almodóvar del Río: the castle is the star. You can buy a ticket and explore it on your own or join a guided visit, which helps you understand its history and the details of the restoration. If you're staying in Córdoba, there are half-day excursions combining the castle with other spots in the Guadalquivir plain.

How long to spend

Allow an hour and a half to two hours for the castle, a bit more if you take the guided visit. With a stroll through the old town and a stop at the Portus Romano, you have a full morning. If you fancy nature, spend the afternoon at the La Breña reservoir. From Córdoba it's an easy half-day trip, and you can combine it with Hornachuelos and its nature park.

Where to stay

Accommodation in the town is limited, mainly rural houses and apartments in the old town and the streets heading down to the river. Staying here lets you see the castle floodlit at night and go up early, before the groups arrive. For more options, Córdoba is less than half an hour's drive away and the most practical base for combining several visits.
