What to see in Pesués

Must-sees

Pesués is the main village of the municipality of Val de San Vicente, at the far western end of the Cantabrian coast, next to the border with Asturias. It is a quiet place of meadows and scattered hamlets, on the Coastal Way of the Camino de Santiago. Its big attraction is the setting: close by, the Deva river flows into the Tina Mayor estuary, a narrow inlet between rock walls, with marshes and reed beds that shelter waterfowl.

A few kilometres away is Unquera, on the edge of the estuary, famous for its corbatas, bow-shaped puff pastries usually eaten with hot chocolate. From there the road follows the Deva up to Liébana and the Picos de Europa. To the east, the Pechón peninsula has fine sandy beaches and viewpoints over the coast and the Tina Menor estuary, and San Vicente de la Barquera is a short drive away.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free tours in Pesués: here the thing to do is outdoor adventure. Options include canoeing down the Deva, which can also be combined with the Cares, and rafting on the same river, suitable for beginners and for groups with some experience. Another option is a caving trip in a local cave, with a guide and equipment. Book all of them ahead, especially in summer.

How long to spend

The village is quick to see, but the area has plenty to offer. Allow half a day for an activity on the river or in the cave and another half for walking by the estuary and trying the corbatas in Unquera. With two or three days you can add the Pechón beaches, San Vicente de la Barquera and a trip up the Deva gorge towards the Picos de Europa.

Where to stay

Pesués and the villages of Val de San Vicente have rural houses, apartments and the odd small hotel, a good base if you want peace and quiet and plan activities on the Deva. Unquera has more services and sits by the motorway and the Liébana road. If you prefer a fishing-town atmosphere and more restaurants, San Vicente de la Barquera is the most complete alternative, and Pechón puts you right by the beaches.
