What to see in Caleta de Fuste

Must-sees

Caleta de Fuste, in the municipality of Antigua, is one of Fuerteventura’s best-known resorts. Its beach fills a shell-shaped bay with calm water and few waves, good for families. Next to it are the marina and the castle, an 18th-century defence tower that gives the area its name.

A short distance south are the Salinas del Carmen, traditional salt pans with a salt museum and a seafront walk. The airport and Puerto del Rosario are very close. Inland, Antigua, with its windmill, and Betancuria, the island’s former capital, are worth a visit.

Free tours and guided visits

Free walking tours are not common in Caleta de Fuste, because it is a recent resort. Guided trips from here are the norm. One of the most complete tours the centre of the island: Betancuria and its church, the viewpoints on the mountain road, Pájara and the caves of Ajuy, on the west coast.

Another option is the trip north, with Corralejo Dunes Nature Park and, by boat, Lobos island. There are also catamaran trips from the port, coastal cruises, diving, kayaking and bike tours. Some trips cross to Lanzarote by ferry from Corralejo for the day.

How long to spend

You can get to know the town in a morning, with a walk along the beach, the port and the castle, and a stop at the Salinas del Carmen. To see Fuerteventura from here, allow three or four days: one for the interior and Betancuria, another for the north and Corralejo, another for the south, and a free one for the beach.

Where to stay

The most convenient choice is to stay near the beach and the marina, where the restaurants, shops and promenade are. From there everything is within walking distance. The areas a little further from the centre, towards the salt pans, are quieter. Its closeness to the airport and central position on the island make it a good base if you are touring Fuerteventura by car.
