What to see in Alhaurín el Grande

Must-sees

Alhaurín el Grande is a white village in the province of Málaga, on the northern side of the Sierra de Mijas and overlooking the Guadalhorce valley, about thirty kilometres from the city. It is a land of citrus, fruit trees and market gardens. In the old quarter, the Arco del Cobertizo, an arch of Moorish origin, and the church of the Encarnación stand out. Around the centre you will also find the Vera Cruz and San Sebastián chapels and the Fuente de Lucena.

Easter Week defines the village's character. Two brotherhoods, the Morados of Jesús Nazareno and the Verdes of the Vera Cruz, keep up a friendly rivalry that you can feel in the streets, and on Good Friday local people act out scenes of the Passion during the processions. The Sierra de Mijas offers hiking routes with views over the whole valley.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Alhaurín el Grande. The best-known organised activity is a visit to an olive mill and oil museum, ending with an olive oil tasting, a good way to learn about olive growing in the valley. The centre is easy to explore on your own, and there are day trips around the Guadalhorce valley from Málaga.

How long to spend

A morning is enough for the old quarter, the church and the chapels. If you add the olive oil visit, allow a relaxed full day. With two days you can walk a route in the Sierra de Mijas or visit Coín and Alhaurín de la Torre. If you come at Easter, the village fills up, so arrive in good time to see the processions.

Where to stay

In the village there are a few small hotels and apartments, close to the centre so you can do everything on foot. In the countryside, among orchards and orange groves, there are plenty of rural houses and estates with pools, a quiet option with views of the sierra. If you want more choice, Málaga is less than half an hour away, and the Fuengirola and Torremolinos coast lies on the other side of the sierra.
