What to see in Sabiote

Must-sees

Sabiote is a village in the La Loma area of Jaén, very close to Úbeda and overlooking the Guadalimar valley. Its old town keeps a medieval layout of cobbled streets, coats of arms on noble houses and gateways that once led into the walled town, such as the Arco de la Alegría. The great monument is the castle, a fortress of medieval origin that Andrés de Vandelvira transformed in the 16th century into a Renaissance palace for Francisco de los Cobos.

The church of San Pedro was built during the 16th and 17th centuries over an earlier church, to designs by Alonso Barba, a pupil of Vandelvira. Also worth seeing are the convent of the Discalced Carmelites, next to the church of Santa María de la Estrella, and the Casa de las Manillas, a Renaissance building. Sabiote is part of the Renaissance route along with Úbeda and Baeza.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free tours in Sabiote, but there are guided visits. The most common one covers the old town and includes entry to the castle, and there is also a visit focusing only on the fortress, with its courtyards, stables and wall walk. If you are in a group or with family, there is a private tour option tailored to you. From Úbeda and Baeza it is easy to come on your own.

How long to spend

Allow half a day for the old town, the church of San Pedro and the castle visit. If you want to stroll at leisure and have lunch in the village, give it the whole day. Ideally combine it with Úbeda and Baeza on a two- or three-day break around Jaén's Renaissance. If you coincide with El Medievo, the village's medieval festival, the streets will be full of atmosphere.

Where to stay

You can stay inside the old town, where there are rural stays in traditional houses, so you can explore on foot and see the village peacefully at dusk. Accommodation in Sabiote is limited, so book if you are going at a weekend or during festivals. Úbeda, a few minutes' drive away, has many more options and works as a base for the whole area.
