What to see in Salobreña

Must-sees

Salobreña rises on a rock by the sea, with white houses climbing up to the castle. Walk up the steep streets of the old town to the Nasrid fortress, which served as residence and prison for members of the Granada royal family. From the top you can see the plain, the sea and, on clear days, the mountains. Next to the castle is the Mudéjar church of the Rosario.

Below, El Peñón rock separates two beaches and is a favourite spot for watching the sunset. The promenade has beach bars and fish restaurants. Around the town, the plain of the river Guadalfeo recalls the days when sugar cane dominated this coast, and traces of that landscape remain.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free tours in Salobreña. The usual options are guided visits to the castle and the old town, explaining the Nasrid history and the Christian conquest, sometimes with a combined ticket. Ask at the tourist office about the visits running each season. For day trips, Granada is an hour away by car, with daily free tours and guided visits to the Alhambra. It is also easy to head up to the Alpujarra, with villages such as Pampaneira, or over to Almuñécar and La Herradura beach.

How long to spend

Allow half a day for the old town and the castle, ideally first thing or late in the afternoon, when the slopes are more manageable. With a full day you can add the beach and sunset at El Peñón. If you stay four or five days, you will have time for Granada, the Alpujarra and other spots on the Costa Tropical.

Where to stay

If you want the village atmosphere, stay in or around the old town. You will have views and the castle a few minutes away, although the slopes are steep and parking is difficult. For a beach holiday, the seafront and the developments near the sea are more convenient and have more apartments. The two areas are a few minutes apart by car.
