What to see in Oliva de Plasencia

Must-sees

Oliva de Plasencia is a small village in northern Cáceres province, a few kilometres from Plasencia, in the Ambroz and Cáparra area. Within its municipality lies the Roman city of Cáparra, one of the most important sites of ancient Lusitania, beside the Vía de la Plata. Its best-known image is the tetrapylon, a four-sided arch that marked the crossing of the two main streets and is unique in the Iberian Peninsula.

At the site you can also see remains of the forum, the baths and a stretch of Roman road, and at the entrance an interpretation centre helps make sense of the city. In the village, the 17th-century square-plan palace of the Counts of Oliva stands out. For birdwatchers, the Fresnedillas lagoon is a good place to see black storks, egrets and other species.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours or regularly organised activities in Oliva de Plasencia. The usual format is a visit to Cáparra supported by the interpretation centre, which provides information on the site. In summer, the Roman setting hosts classical theatre performances. If you are in Plasencia or Hervás, you can drive over quickly and combine the visit with other villages nearby.

How long to spend

One or two hours are enough for the village. Cáparra deserves another two or three, including the interpretation centre and a walk around the site and the Roman road. Half a day covers everything, and to make the most of the day you can add the Fresnedillas lagoon or continue to Plasencia, with its cathedral and old town.

Where to stay

Accommodation in the village itself is very limited, with a rural house or two. The most practical option is to stay in Plasencia, which has hotels in and around the historic centre and is very close. Another good option is the Ambroz valley, with Hervás or Baños de Montemayor, where there is more rural accommodation and a mountain atmosphere.
