What to see in Font-rubí

Must-sees

Font-rubí is a municipality in the Alt Penedès made up of several settlements spread among vineyards and hills. Its capital is Guardiola de Font-rubí, on a small rise by the Vilafranca del Penedès road. Higher up, on the slope of the Puig del Castellot, is the tiny village of Font-rubí, named after a spring of iron-rich water. There stand the ruins of the castle, documented since 983, with remains of a wall and a round tower, and the church of Sant Pere i Sant Feliu, of Romanesque origin. The view from the top over the Penedès plain is magnificent.

Around the municipality there are small Romanesque churches worth seeking out, such as the chapel of Sant Joan de la Maçana, with its semicircular apse, or the 18th-century church of Santa Maria de Bellver. Grabuac was the centre of the old barony of Font-rubí. The municipality follows the line of the Carrerada, an ancient route for traders and transhumant livestock. And, as everywhere in the Penedès, vineyards take centre stage, with family wineries making wine and cava.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours in Font-rubí, as it is a rural, scattered municipality. What people usually do here is visit a family winery, with a walk through the vines and a tasting of its wines and cavas, normally booked in advance. For the castle and the hermitages, the best option is to go on your own on foot or by car. Wine tours of the Penedès also leave from Barcelona.

How long to spend

In half a day you can visit a winery and climb to Font-rubí castle for the view. If you want to tour the Romanesque hermitages and walk among the vines, give it the whole day. Ideally combine it with other Alt Penedès towns such as Vilafranca del Penedès or Sant Sadurní d'Anoia on a two-day trip through wine country.

Where to stay

Accommodation in Font-rubí is mainly rural houses and farmhouses among vineyards, perfect if you want peace. If you cannot find a room, Vilafranca del Penedès, a few kilometres away, is the best base, with hotels in the centre and good rail and motorway links. Sant Sadurní d'Anoia and the Sitges coast are also a short drive away.
