What to see in A Illa de Arousa

Must-sees

A Illa de Arousa is an island and municipality within the Arousa estuary, in the O Salnés area. You reach it by road over a bridge of almost two kilometres linking it with Vilanova de Arousa. The main village lives from the sea, with a very busy fishing harbour and a canning past explained at the Canning Interpretation Centre, devoted to the industry that shaped the island. The church of San Xulián completes a walk round the village.

The southern half is taken up by the O Carreirón Natural Park, a low peninsula with dunes, pine woods and an inland lagoon where migratory birds rest, with hides for watching them. A waymarked trail goes round it in just over an hour, passing several beaches, including Xastelas, the largest. To the north, the 19th-century Punta Cabalo lighthouse looks out over the estuary.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free tours in A Illa de Arousa. The most practical plan is to stop at the tourist office to get your bearings and explore O Carreirón on your own, as the trail is well signposted. Boat trips round the estuary leave from the harbour, as do crossings to the islet of Areoso, a sandbank with dunes reachable only by sea. If you are staying in Sanxenxo, Cambados or Pontevedra, you will find trips around O Salnés that include the island.

How long to spend

Half a day lets you see the village, the harbour and the Punta Cabalo lighthouse. To walk round O Carreirón calmly and stop at its beaches, allow a full day. In summer it is worth staying two or three days, combining the beach with a boat trip and a visit to Cambados, a short drive away, for its historic centre and Albariño wineries.

Where to stay

On the island, the harbour area and the village centre have most of the apartments and small places to stay, and from there you can get around on foot or by bike. The north coast, towards Punta Cabalo, is quieter and close to the beaches. Choice is limited and fills up in summer, so book early. If you cannot find a room, Vilanova de Arousa, just across the bridge, and Cambados have more options.
