What to see in Alfamén

Must-sees

Alfamén is a village in the Campo de Cariñena, in Zaragoza province, surrounded by vineyards and market gardens. It is known for its melons and watermelons, but what has put it on the map is street art. Since 2017 it has hosted the Asalto festival, which each year invites artists to paint murals inspired by the memory of the village, its people and its oral tradition.

Walking its streets is like visiting an open-air museum, with façades, party walls and water tanks turned into large-scale works. On the Plaza de España is the church of the Inmaculada Concepción, a 20th-century building that keeps a 16th-century Plateresque altarpiece. About four kilometres away, on the Altomira hill, are the remains of an old Iberian settlement.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours in Alfamén. The activity you can book is a guided street art route around the village, where you learn the story of each mural, including a tasting of Campo de Cariñena appellation wines. If you prefer to go on your own, the murals are spread throughout the village and easy to see on a stroll.

How long to spend

Two or three hours are enough to see the main murals at leisure. If you take the guided route with tasting, allow half a day. With a full day you can combine Alfamén with Cariñena and its wineries, following the Campo de Cariñena Wine Route, or with other villages in the area. It is an easy trip from Zaragoza.

Where to stay

Alfamén has very little accommodation, so most people sleep elsewhere. Cariñena, the area's capital, is close and has more options, plus wineries to visit. For variety and atmosphere, Zaragoza is the best base: from the city centre you can drive there in just over half an hour.
