What to see in Bielsa

Must-sees

Bielsa is a village in the Aragonese Pyrenees, where the rivers Cinca and Barrosa meet. Its centre is small and quick to see. The highlight is the Renaissance town hall, with arcades, which houses an ethnological museum on life in the valley and on the Bielsa Pocket, the Civil War episode that forced the population to evacuate to France in 1938.

The main reason to come is a few kilometres away: the Pineta valley, the eastern entrance to Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park. It is a glacial valley closed off by huge walls, with waterfalls in spring. From its head start routes such as the Balcón de Pineta or the Llanos de La Larri. In winter, the Bielsa carnival, with its trangas, is well known.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free tours as such here. The usual format is guided mountain trips: guided routes in Pineta, outings to the Balcón de Pineta for the fit, snowshoeing in winter and interpretive walks in the national park. A guide adds safety on long routes and explains the valley’s geology and wildlife. You can also cross the Bielsa tunnel to the French side.

How long to spend

A morning is enough for the village and the museum. If you are coming to walk, allow at least two or three days: one for the head of Pineta and La Larri, another for a demanding route such as the Balcón de Pineta, and a third for the Chistau valley or the French side.

Where to stay

Sleeping in the village itself is the most convenient, with services, restaurants and quick access to Pineta and the tunnel. If you want to be right in the landscape, there are places to stay in the Pineta valley, more isolated and very peaceful. Another option is to stay in Aínsa, half an hour away, and combine the visit with other valleys.
