What to see in Puertollano

Must-sees

Puertollano is a city shaped by coal mining and industry, with mountains all around. The Paseo de San Gregorio is its heart. Here you will find the Fuente Agria, a spring of iron-rich water with a pavilion that is the city’s symbol. At the end of the promenade is the Casa de Baños, from the spa era, a reminder of the town’s thermal past.

To understand local history, visit the Mining Museum, which recreates a gallery and shows tools, machinery and miners’ lives. In the centre, the church of La Asunción and the Plaza Mayor stand out. On the outskirts, the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Gracia, the patron, is much loved by locals and the starting point for walks in the surrounding park.

Free tours and guided visits

Free walking tours are not the norm in Puertollano. Usually there are guided visits to the Mining Museum and some routes organised by the town council. The city works very well as a base for excursions. Almagro, with its open-air theatre, is a short distance away. The castle-convent of Calatrava la Nueva and the Alcudia valley, with its dehesa landscape and the Sierra Madrona in the background, are highly recommended outings for nature lovers.

How long to spend

Half a day is enough for the city itself: the Paseo de San Gregorio, the Fuente Agria and the Mining Museum. If you use it as a base, two or three days let you add a morning in Almagro, another at Calatrava la Nueva and a route through the Alcudia valley. Having a car makes things much easier.

Where to stay

The most convenient area to stay is the centre, around the Paseo de San Gregorio and the Plaza Mayor. You are close to the main sights, the bars and the shops. The high-speed station is also handy, useful if you are arriving from Madrid or Andalusia. If you are driving, check that there is parking nearby.
