What to see in Marín

Must-sees

Marín is a seafaring town on the south shore of the Pontevedra estuary, in the Morrazo area, a few kilometres from the provincial capital. It is known throughout Spain for the Naval Military Academy, whose facilities take up much of the seafront, and for its fishing port. In the centre, the Templo Vello stands out, a Baroque church with a clock in its tower, as does the Manuel Torres Municipal Museum, devoted to the work of this local painter.

The coast is the big draw. The beaches of Portocelo, Mogor, Aguete and Loira have calm water and views over the estuary. Next to Mogor beach are the Mogor petroglyphs, labyrinth-shaped carvings several thousand years old, with an interpretation centre. Inland, the Cotorredondo natural area, between Marín and Vilaboa, has woodland, picnic areas and Lake Castiñeiras, a good plan for a hot day.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in Marín. For information on routes and activities, the best place is the municipal tourist office on Plaza de España. Many visitors see Marín as part of a Rías Baixas excursion from Pontevedra or Vigo, or combining the town with other villages on the Morrazo peninsula. The petroglyphs and local trails can be explored on your own.

How long to spend

Half a morning is enough for the centre, the harbour and the walk by the Naval Academy. If you add the Mogor petroglyphs and an afternoon on the beach, give it a full day. With two days you can add Cotorredondo and Lake Castiñeiras, or visit the rest of the Morrazo peninsula and Pontevedra, which is very close.

Where to stay

In Marín you can choose between the centre, near the harbour and the bars and restaurants, or the beaches of Mogor and Aguete, quieter and with places geared to summer. The choice is not large, so book ahead in July and August. Pontevedra, a few minutes away, has many more beds and a lovely historic centre for sleeping and dining.
