What to see in Costa Teguise

Must-sees

Costa Teguise is on the east coast of Lanzarote, a few kilometres from Arrecife. It is a planned resort with several calm beaches, such as Las Cucharas, the largest and known for windsurfing, and smaller ones like El Jablillo, Bastián and Los Charcos. The promenade links them and is easy to walk.

In the centre is Pueblo Marinero, a square of traditional architecture in which César Manrique was involved, with bars and terraces. Nearby is the town of Teguise, the island’s former capital, with its historic centre, Santa Bárbara Castle and its Sunday market. In Guatiza is the Cactus Garden, Manrique’s last work.

Free tours and guided visits

Free walking tours are not common in Costa Teguise, but in the town of Teguise there are guided visits of the old town, its churches and palaces. From here the norm is to book full-day trips around the island. That way you can see the highlights of Lanzarote without driving.

The most interesting are the visit to Timanfaya and La Geria, and the northern route with the Jameos del Agua, the Cueva de los Verdes, the Mirador del Río and the Cactus Garden. Thanks to its constant wind, Costa Teguise is a good place for windsurfing and surf lessons. Boats to La Graciosa also leave from Órzola, in the north.

How long to spend

You can see Costa Teguise in a few hours, walking between its beaches and Pueblo Marinero. As a base for seeing Lanzarote, allow three or four days: one for Timanfaya, another for the north and the Manrique sites, a morning in Teguise and the rest for the beach. If you have a day to spare, the trip to La Graciosa is worth it.

Where to stay

The areas near Las Cucharas beach and Pueblo Marinero are the most convenient, because restaurants, shops and the beach are a step away. If you want something quieter, the areas around El Jablillo and Los Charcos are more residential. From anywhere you quickly reach Arrecife and the airport, which makes it easy to get around the whole island.
